DIY Organic Trail Mix

Obviously, making your own trail mix isn’t hard to do. But, we I forget it exists half the time. Sometimes, I catch myself looking through the house for a grab-and-go healthy snack or one I don’t have to prep when I could simply fill a jar with homemade trail mix ahead of time, which takes all of two seconds to make. This would also make a great gift for the holidays! So, head to Trader Joes or the bulk bins wherever you prefer to shop and bring home some different kinds of nuts you like, dried fruit and dark chocolate chips.

About the measurements, I just eye it. If you want to measure it, do equal parts of each, maybe a little less on the chocolate chips (but that’s the best part!) and then find a glass jar to store it in. The bigger your jar, the more you make! Or something like that šŸ™‚ You could do increments of a 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup, 1 cup, etc. depending on how much you want to store. Here’s what I came up with using what I had.

Homemade {Organic} Hazelnut Fig Trail Mix // Healthy Snack + DIY Christmas Gift | Freshly Grown

Homemade {Organic} Hazelnut Fig Trail Mix

1/4 c. Oregon hazelnuts, whole

1/4 c. Almonds, whole

1/4 c. Cashews, whole

1/4 c. Walnuts, whole of halved

1/4 c. Pumpkin seeds, green

1/4 c. *Dried cherries, whole or halved

1/4 c. *Dried figs, cut into halves or fourths

1/4 c. Dark, Fair Trade chocolate chips

Mix all ingredients in a big bowl until evenly distributed. Pour into your glass storage container and seal. Wait…eat, then seal. Enjoy!

*About dried fruits, sulfur dioxide (sulfites) is a preservative used on most conventional dried fruits to retain their color. It can trigger asthma is some and approximately 20 deaths have occurred due to sulfite sensitivity. It’s no joke. Look for organic, dried fruits and/or sulfite, sulfur dioxide-free dried fruits.

Read the San Francisco Chronicle’s The Health Risks of Sulfur Dioxide in Dried Fruits for more info.

So good! So beautiful too – great presentation. New Seasons has a great “blend your own” trailmix bar and I love it. Carob chips are one of the few little treats sneaking into my diet until baby comes – but I love the thought of dried cherries too. I need to pick up some cute little jars to assemble them in. Little Miss would love it!!
