Fabulous {Borax-Free} Laundry Soap

freshly-grown-non-toxic-laundry

Everyone on the web seems to have their own version of homemade laundry soap. I’ve tried my fair share and came up with this one and have been using it for years. It works for us. It’s easy to make and borax-free if you are concerned about using borax. If you’ve been looking to save money by making your own laundry soap, this one works great!

DIY {Borax-Free} Laundry Soap

3 cups Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda

1.5 cups 7th Generation Natural Oxy

3 bars non-toxic coconut soap

20+ drops of each essential oil. Love YL’s Lemon + Lavender and have been adding Purification as well to kill all odors. Learn more here.

Combine 3 cups washing soda + 1.5 cups 7th Gen. Oxy in a big bowl. Set aside.

Cut your 3 bars of soap into 4 long slices. In a heavy duty food processor, using a shredding disc, put each slice of soap down the chute while it’s on. After you’ve done this with all 3 bars, what you will have left is shredded soap. Take the disc out and place the blade in and turn it on. This will turn the shredded soap into fine, crumbled soap.

Add the fine, crumbled soap to the bowl with the oxy and washing soda. Stir until mixed. Add 20 or more drops of essential oils of your choice. Grapefruit is nice and I really like the combination of Lemon-Lavender for scent and disinfecting + Purification for odors.

That’s it! Store in a container and get a little tablespoon scooper. Use 1-2 Tbs. per load.

A Few Questions Answered

Yes, it can be used in front loaders.

It makes approx. 7.5 cups (it makes more than what is shown in the pic.)

You can try using only 1 bar of soap for cost-effectiveness, I like 3.

I don’t have the cost breakdown of this, but if you are so inclined add it to the comments!

You can definitely double, triple, quadruple this recipe for longer storage and use.

I like Kirk’s Castile Soap and probably why I use 3 bars. They are smaller bars. Ingredients: Coconut Soap, Water, Vegetable Glycerin, Coconut Oil, Natural Fragrance. They also carry a fragrance-free option.

I’m relatively new to all this homemade stuff and am having WAY too much fun! LOL its the little things that entertain me. My question…I use vinegar for fabric softener, and I’ve read that vinegar cancels out any fragrance you might add…does this apply to laundry detergent too? I’m ok with no-scent detergent, but if I can have it scented, I’m all over essential oils! I’m trying this without the oxy added in, so its zote soap, baking soda and washing powder. Thanks, love your site!

    • Hey, Kate! I know, all this homemade stuff gets pretty fun, huh? About the vinegar + essential oils, I use them together all the time. I haven’t noticed the canceling out effect of vinegar. You may just have to try it and see. I use this for my all-purpose cleaner in a rotation and it’s fabulous and smells great! http://freshly-grown.com/stupid-easy-all-purpose-cleaner/

      Thanks for following!

Thank you for the great recipe! Getting supplies now.
I don’t have a food processor. Do you think that it would work ok in a vitamix?

    Thank you!
